Top 5 beaches for families in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is an attractive travel destination for its beaches that can be visited throughout the year thanks to our island’s tropical climate. In this article, I am sharing our top five beaches in Puerto Rico that we have visited and consider to be the best for a memorable family day out. These beaches have shallow shores and minimal waves or surf because they are in bays or have natural tide breakers such as rock structures or corals. For your experience to be the best, arriving early to secure a good parking spot and a place to enjoy the best views of the beach with your family is always advisable. In addition, it is important to check the weather conditions and any events that may affect sea conditions at least a day before your planned trip. So, here are our top five family-friendly beaches:

5. Guayanés Beach – Yabucoa. Guayanés Beach has little waves, a spacious palm tree shoreline, cement gazebos for parties and picnics, and a public bathroom area. It has free parking and small food kiosks and restaurants nearby.

4. Balneario Seven Seas – Fajardo. Called Seven Seas and located on the Eastern Coast, this long coastal beach has tranquil waves and pristine water. It is fronted by palms and various lush tropical trees. It has ample parking, bathrooms, showers, gazebos for rent, a camping area, and food and drink kiosks. Nearby is Las Cabezas de San Juan’s Lighthouse.

3. La Jungla – Guánica. An abundance of mangroves surrounds La Jungla. Enjoy kayaking and paddleboarding in the smooth waters or bask in the sun while enjoying all the surroundings. Lastly, take a walk along the fine white sand. The road for traffic is not paved, and there is limited parking. It is recommended to bring a beach umbrella because of limited shaded areas. There are no bathrooms.

2. Pozo Teodoro – Isabela. This is a hidden gem tucked between sand dunes. The waves that overcome a large reef create a natural ocean pool, creating a beautiful spectacle of breaking waves on one side flowing to serenity and crystal-clear pools on the other. It has a large area for various beach sports. There is limited parking and no bathrooms.

1. Flamenco Beach – Culebra. This famous beach is known as one of the best in the world. It has fine white sand with turquoise clear water. It is outstanding for snorkeling on the reefs right off the shoreline and bodyboarding. To get to Culebra, you must travel by plane, ferry, or a private boat tour. Parking is available, as well as showers, bathrooms, food kiosks, and rental of chairs and umbrellas.

Comparto nuestro escogido de cinco playas en Puerto Rico que hemos visitado y consideramos como las mejores para pasadías en familia. Son playas que tienen orillas de poca profundidad y poco oleaje porque están en bahías o tienen rompeolas naturales. Para que tu experiencia sea la mejor, siempre es recomendable llegar temprano para tener un buen estacionamiento y lugar para disfrutar de la playa en familia. Además, es bien importante verificar las condiciones del tiempo y los eventos que puedan afectar las condiciones del mar.

5. Playa Guayanés – Yabucoa. Es una playa de poco oleaje y espaciosa, con orilla de palmeras. Cuenta con gazebos de cemento y área de baños públicos. Tiene estacionamiento gratuito y negocios de frituras y comida cercanos al área.

4. Balneario Seven Seas – Fajardo. Es una playa extensa de poco oleaje, agua cristalina y frente de palmas y árboles. Tiene amplio estacionamiento, baños, duchas, gazebos para alquiler, área de acampar y kioscos de comida y bebidas. Cerca está el Faro de Las Cabezas de San Juan. El estacionamiento tiene costo.

3. La Jungla – Guánica. Es una playa que está rodeada de mangles, tiene poco oleaje y es cómoda para kayaking y paddle. Es una playa de arena fina y blanca. El camino para el tránsito no está pavimentado y no hay mucho estacionamiento. Es necesario llevar sombrilla de playa porque los pocos arbustos que la rodean no proveen mucha sombra. No hay baños.

2. Pozo Teodoro – Isabela. Es una playa escondida entre dunas de arena. La poza es creada por el oleaje que sobrepasa un amplio arrecife y crea un hermoso espectáculo de olas rompientes. Tiene una amplia zona de arena que permite jugar deportes playeros. Hay estacionamiento limitado y no hay baños.

1. Playa Flamenco – Culebra. Es clasificada como una de las mejores playas del mundo. Tiene arena fina y blanca con agua cristalina. Es buena para snorkeling y bodyboarding. Para llegar a Culebra puedes ir en avión, ferry o un tour de embarcaciones privadas. Tiene estacionamiento, duchas, baños, kioscos de comida y alquiler de sillas y sombrillas.
